In the SC the dumplings will take an hour. To cook in the oven you could pop them on a baking tray for 1/2 hour.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

My dumplings turn out the same when I add them to the stew cooked in the slow cooker as they do when I pop them on top of the stew in the oven. If you prefer oven cooked, can you transfer your stew to the oven for a final 20 mins and add the dumplings on top - pop the lid on and 20 mins later they will be done :o)

On another note I made vegetarian dumplings recently with veg suet - they were so greasy the whole stew spoilt and tasted of grease. yuk!

  • thank you both, i will do them in the oven i think as my SC is quite small and does have quite a lot of casserole in it, so i can freeze whatever is left, and there probably won't be enough room in there for them ... maybe next time though!!
and thanks for the recipe tan, i will give it a go next time hopefully if DH likes these ones(he's not a fan of dumplings for some reason, i'm hoping to convert him)

the casserole is in the slow cooker and unfortunately i don't have a casserole dish for the oven and i daren't risk using my SC pot in there.

or - you could drop dumplings into a pan of simmering water and cook them for recommended twenty minutes! then add them to the slow cooker for a few minutes.
hun as some other posters have pointed out - dumpling mix just contains premeasured flour suet and probably salt! as that is all thats in dumplings!
get a box of Atora suet (they do a vegetarain one too) and follow directions! easy peasy
    you can also
add a teaspoon of dried herbs
    an ounce of grated cheese
or substitute half the white flour for wholemeal (this is way i make them) and add a pinch of baking powder!
i hated dumplings when i was a kid as my mum used a packet mix! since i learned to make them myself - i love them and always make as many as my pan holds (12)

A 'certain' Vegetable Suet contains hydrogenated vegetable oil - maybe that's why your dumplings turned out greasey .
