I currently have a 2gb 1.73Ghz laptop ( single core)
Its taking literally hours to convert a simple dvd from Avi to vso ect , I know it depends on your Cpu, sooooo
What cpu would you guys recommend? I dont mind replacing my laptop with a different one, but please bare in mind i am very tight with my money ( i even haggle when making a donation!)

If I remember rightly, Tom's Harware website provides a variety of benchmarks for CPUs.0

any one with more than one core thats not ancient. be sure you have a decent hard drive with good sustained data transfer rate and plenty of RAM.0

have you done all the basic maintenance thats usually suggested on this site (malwarebytes hijack this etc)
if you have done them you need to have a look at the program you are using, some are better than others
other than this if you are still not happy it will likely be a new system as you cant change the CPU in a laptop (generally), however this can throw up many different options so we would need to know what your actualy budget is, as the best CPU for video encoding will be expensive, what we need to look at is best for your budget,
and then the next question is does it have to be a laptop or could you go with a desktop, and if so what parts do you have and can you connect it to your tv to save buying a monitor (most HDTV's have at least a VGA connection for a computer)Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
If you have a Nvidia Graphics card you might be able to use it's GPU to do some of the conversion work
Check to see if your graphics card is on this list:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_gpus.html
There's a conversion program that uses the GPU to convert movies
check out the trial version here:
http://badaboomit.com/
According to Nvidia if you have a suitable graphics card you can cut it down to tens of mins to convert a DVD rather than hours...Laters

It has to be a laptop, my budget would only be around £300, i have a 300gb External Hd with all my movies ect on it and i also have several 2.5" 120GB`s Sata Hard drive lying around so disk space is not a problem.
My Tv Is brand spanking new, 50" Plasma with all the trimmings, Usb H.D.M.I, Opticals the whole 9 yards.0 -

Buy an Xbox for < £150, install TVersity freeware on your existing laptop and it will stream to your TV via the Xbox without the need for the conversion to DVD format - it does the transcoding on the fly.
My laptop is the same spec as yours and copes with the media serving without a hitch.0
