Car Hire in California

Hi there,
I'm taking my partner and children away to LA in a week or so to celebrate her 40th birthday. Although I have been to US few times before it has been for business and have not hired a car. Comparing prices on car hire Hertz look pretty good but have no idea about the insurance thats included/not included CDW etc etc. Can anyone tell me what I need, the pitfalls and whther its worth trying to arrange insurance from a separate provider. From what I can see things maybe a little different in Californai versus other states.
Thanks very much.

Hertz offered me an additional insurance at $8 per day, but it was nothing more than Roadside Assistance cover and not needed.
The cars at Hertz were in great condition too, a lot better than the budget companies.0 -
