Vista driving me nuts

I decided earlier that I would sort out my computer so that my daughter cannot use it before school.

I have set up a guest user which is what she usually uses but it wouldnt let me put the parental control option on it. I then set up another user for her and set up the parental control. I blocked use of the computer during certain hours.

FOr some strange reason, when I logged into my username, it wouldnt then connect to the internet. I've had to "system restore" to get everything working again.

Where did I go wrong?

My bet is you got the accounts the wrong way round when setting up the parental control as AFAIR you have to do it through Windows Live, so have actually set the daughters account up as the master and restricted yours.

Kids need to learn resposibility. I would tell her access to computer is restricted to certain times and if she abuses the privelidge you will cancel her access for a week.

  • You don't say how old your daughter is.

If she's a teenager, she probably knows more about her way around these systems than you - so you're only kidding yourself by thinking you can control the situation...

Better to treat her like an adult and start talking to her about what she does online and what she should look out for - and when she can use it.
If you're a clever computer user, there are hundreds of sneakier ways to discover what your kids are up to online without the blunt mallot of a solution called 'Parental Control'!

Thanks for the reply. The reason for banning her from the computer was due to some back chatting and being horrible to her brother. She is not quite a teenager yet.

We just have one computer which she is only allowed to use while we are present and able to monitor what she is doing. Tweeking the computer so she couldnt use it was a form of punishment for this recent behaviour.

What 'parental control option' are you trying to use?

Rather than trying to grapple with Vista's inbuilt parental controls, you might want to try Windows Live Family Safety from Microsoft, it's free and much easier to use.
