It is our 40th anniversary at the start of next year and I am making a big deal of it, believe me! All my family are very much aware that it is our Ruby Wedding. We are not having a big party but have booked a really fab holiday - just for us! We will be away for the actual day.

Do you think your parents would keep quiet if it was their 40th anniversary?

The local register office in the district that the marriage took place will hold a copy of the certificate and the statutory fee is £9, although some offices will charge a same day fee/postage fee.

Your best bet is to do as others have suggested, try ancestry (free at local libarary) or www.freebmd.co.uk (which is free). If you go to the office, you will need to know the names of the people at the time of marriage, the exact place (which church/register office), and the date (being out a year will be fine).

    Hope that helps
  • Good morning all,

Thanks to 2 rather lovely posters looking for me I found out that it was their 39th which, I have to admit I have never really thought about it before, cause they are just "Mam & Dad", but 39 years......... wow! I have sort of new found respect for them.

They aren't big party people so I don't think there will be much of a fuss for their Ruby (and knowing my dad he probably wont even remember!!) but have spoken to sis and we have agreed to make a bit of a fuss of them next year cause its a special one.

Now to think of a pressie for this year........... individually they are difficult to buy for, together they are impossible!!! (Especially when funds are tight)

Thank you very much for all your suggestions.

For my parents' 60th wedding anniversary, we contacted all their old friends and all the family and asked people to make a "page" for a memories book. Some people put together some photos, some wrote about things that had happened, some didn't feel able to do it themselves but contacted us and we put together some things for them.

I also went through the family photos and made up a new photo album of the sixty years.

It was a resounding success and better than anything we could have bought for them.

Thanks for all the replies I had a PM from a lovely person offering to look on ancestry for me, so fingers crossed!

Why didn't we ask them?? I think both of us are a bit embarrassed we don’t know! Especially with the chance it might be a big one :o

    Cheers for the help

Don't you remember when their silver wedding anniversary was? Do either of them have any siblings or parents you could ask?
