Stolen & recovered - future impact?

My car was recently stolen and recovered - found within 36 hours, 5 miles away with damage only to the alloys and scratched bumper. Its now obviously recorded as solen and recovered - are there different grades as it was such low damage...Im trying to understand if I will ever be able to sell it and if so the impact that it will have on purchasers and financially to the value. Am I also able to request a copy of the engineers report from the insurance company - after all it is my car?

How do you know it is recorded? What have they given it Cat D or Cat X?

I dont all I know is the insurance company said it will be recorded - I didnt realise there were different categories. Looking at it though these only seem to be when the insurance company sells on to a salvage yard but then somewhere else it says all stolen and recovereds are marked as cat d - Im so confused!

It will probably show up on a HPi Check..

I had one done on a scooby recently - didnt show as a write off ( section came back as unrecorded ) , but there was a seperate section for "stolen recovered" on the check..

It just listed the date of when it was reported stolen.

The car was advertised as HPi clear, and i went to see it anyway..

The guy claimed he had no idea. He knew it had been stolen, but like yours the damage was minimal ( new door lock and front bumper he claimed ) , and it was returned a few days later. He said he has told it wouldnt affect HPi ( hence he didnt put it on advert ) - obviosuly it did show though, so no doubt will affect the value of your car.

So yes, it will affect the resale value probably.

    Regards

You pose a very interesting question.

If they have recorded it as Cat D then they have in effect knocked 15-20% off the resale value. If that is the case you should be looking for full payout or a letter to confirm that they will not be recording is as a write off.

I will be interested to see what some of the other regulars think.

This is where its getting so difficult to understand - with the locks, keysmiths. damage and recovery vehicles the claim must be in the region of £1500 and its only worth £3k

So I definitely need to find out what they are recording it as and get a letter stating?

If the insurance are involved and paying out anything, eventually it will show up on HPI. I would be more worried what happened to the car when it was on its holidays, finding out how fast it will go in reverse, practising drifting etc., I really wouldn't want it back.
When I buy salvage I'm always hyper critical, more so of things that don't apparently have much damage.

They probably found they couldn't get rid of the car that easily so dumped it.

Laptops are easy to steal and get rid but aren't actually worth that much money.

Purse may have ID in it plus cards.

Watch may be valuable and easy to get rid off.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

I thought the stolen recovered tag only got applied if the car got recovered after the insurance had paid out on it and the CAT C & D tags only got applied if the car was recovered but was uneconomic to repair
