Emergency milk?

  • I used ice cube bags once some years ago and found that I couldn't get the ice cubes out of them at all! I ended up with bits of the plastic bags in drinks!

I've not been brave enough to try them since then, have they got better? Is there a particular brand that does work?

  • Of course not you have already said you are intolerant of milk.

Just don't under estimate others capacity to try and even love alternatives. They could just bring their own milk.;)

I cook with soya when I have visitors but I don't feel the need to make them do what I do. Plus one of my friends avoids soya following breast cancer.

I don't under estimate others, my friends cook me the most amazing dairy free things - I feel very guilty because I'm not intolerant to that extent so I still cook with butter!

Anyway, given that I'm happy to make the effort to provide milk for people, I've got some good suggestions :D

  • Hi Lily, we both drink black coffee as I'm not keen on soya in hot drinks (I cook with it quite happily though). When I first came off dairy I used to use sachets of powdered goats milk that I bought from the health food shop. I've no idea if you can still get it. I used to mix a small amount with some cold water and put that in coffee. In the end I just got used to black coffee as it was an awful lot easier!

Never heard of powdered goats milk, thanks for the tip! :)

    Thank you! :T

If you buy a tub of virtually fat free Coffee Mate, you can use a spoonful of that in tea or coffee. It's far more acceptable than powdered milk, and it's what I would always use if I ever find that the milk in the fridge has gone off! And it lasts for ages. You can mix a teaspoonful with a little bit of hot water before adding it to the tea if you're not sure how much to use.

ETA Oops! Sorry, Lily_the_Legend, just noticed you'd already suggested this. So much for me being original!

I didn't suggest mixing it with hot water first though, top tip! :D Might have to get some myself, as although DH drinks milk if we run out he doesn't mind soya, so could be handy for guests. :)

I like rice milk but not tried in hot drinks nor almond/nut milks.

OH who only uses dried at work says coffee whitener from S***burys works well but the tinned dried milk from L*dl gives you lumps in boiling hot drinks.
    Put the kettle on. ;)
