What a palaver!

Went to my local Tesco today and saw a woman attempting to drive away with a clamp on her passenger side front wheel! (I guess she didn't realise it was there until she tried to drive off.) On the windscreen was a huge yellow sticker saying 'UNTAXED VEHICLE'. I thought it was strange that Tesco could clamp the woman's car for having no tax, but hey, people without tax don't have insurance either by default so hard luck. Then, the Tesco security man arrived and got into a blazing row with the clampers, who it turned out were from the DVLA. The clamp was removed, and the woman drove off, still with no tax. On my way out, I asked the trolley collector what happened, and he said that Tesco had told the DVLA that they were on private land, and had no right to clamp the woman's car!

Yes, it had to be the DVLA because Supermarkets don't clamp AFAIK.

I bet she got followed home by a cop car & clamped there instead - that's the only sort of clamping that's OK.
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

  • Quite a surprise as I understood that DVLA clampers COULD clamp on land the public had access to, private or not. She was very lucky but I expect they'll catch up with her soon.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
