Two storey extension on a BISF house?

BISF being the British Industrial Steel Federation type houses (ex-council) built in the 1950s/60s - they all look essentially like these on the outside:

(As an example!)
Can anyone tell me whether it is possible to have a two storey extension added on to one of these? (I'm talking down the side of the house where the utility/outhouse area is - as seen on that photo in the weblink above).
Our house is basically like that one - single storey buildings down the side of the house which we're wondering if we could have built on top of? (Obviously the lower level would need strengthening of some sort to support the weight of a 2nd storey I'm guessing).
Just wondering if anyone knows of any way this can be done? Some builders shy away from "non-standard construction" houses so I thought I'd ask on here first as its a minefield trying to get any work done on this type of property
It would be approx 6.2m deep (depth of the house) but width is yet to be decided on if it is even possible at all. (Idea would be to just have one door into the extension from where the window is on the landing upstairs at the top of the staircase so I'm assuming that would be possible in that we'd not be completely knackering the structure of the external wall if we were putting a whole through where there is currently a window.
Any advice much appreciated.
