concurrent licence and seats??? explination please

Hi

can anyone explain in simple terms what this means in a software licence agreement about a product being supplied.

"One copy of the client server version of software installed on 2 seats for one concurrent user."

This will probably depend on the manufacturer of the software you are talking about!
If it were Microsoft I could have a stab at an explanation...
  • - example a 10 user licence is for 10 simultaneous users, which could be one puter running 10 sessions or ten puters running one session each.

Its a small company that supplies specialist software.

so does it mean that you can have 2 sessions open at once but only one user at a time?

i'm wondering as the company i work for have just paid more to have this so it can go on the network. At the moment we just have it on a machine that isn't networked and people use it as and when. I assumed they changed the aggreement so that more then one person can use the software at a time. I'm not understanding the benifit if only one person can still use it.

Probably best to get the specialist software supplier to define exactly what they mean by the statement!

The concept of "one concurrent user" is rather interesting as well, since it is probably a contradiction in terms, given the usual understanding of the word 'concurrent'...

    This.

My guess would be that if you have a 5 concurrent user licence then you are allowed to install the client software on a maximum of 10 different PCs whilst still being limited to a maximum of 5 users online at the same time.
  • I believe it means it can be installed on 2 machines (seats) but can only be used by a single user at a time

Yep. It means you can apply it to 2 machines, but only 1 machine can be in use at any one time.

Rather than "one concurrent user" what they mean is "one user"...

depends on what it does, if it is both the client and server in one piece of software then you probably have to have it installed on 2 machines one individual to have any use out of it
  • Ok I would expect it to be as follows (I used to work in a company that did this)

    Example

    Full time staff 50
    Part Time staff 25

Total Staff 75 so the number of "seats" is 75 as any one of these may need access to the system. BUT you may find that only 60 of these are ever in work at any one time so you would pay for 60 concurrent licences and 75 seats in total (they may term this difference non concurrent users and call it 15)

The concurrent licence count is the MAXIMUM number of people who can be on the system at any one time.
