What account to have as back up?

Hi,
I bank with Barclays at the moment and have a current account and a cash card account with them. I don't have any other accounts elsewhere at all. What basic account could you recommend as back up? Im Ideally looking for a basic bank account with no overdraft but a visa debit card without the credit checks e.t.c. I look forward to your advice and replies.

Kind regards

  • most banks do basic accounts. why not get a halifax easycash account. it comes with a visa electron card. I think that a natwest key account with a visa debit card is good aswell (heard comments from others). basic bank accounts are all roughly the same so it depends on which bank you want to bank with.

Natwest Step account is a good one. I have a Lloyds TSB cash account, which I use a secondary account (holidays/spends etc), and also comes with a Visa debit card, although the only downside is that you can only withdraw cash from a Lloyds TSB ATM, but their internet banking is very good. I think the best basic accounts are Barclays, which you already have and the Natwest one

Depends on your reasoning for having a 'backup' account in the first place really.

I only have one current account (... ok, I have 2...) but they're both with Barclays. What I do have though is a backup in the form of 2 credit cards. My debit cards are obviously both linked to Barclays, and both go via the VISA network. If Barclays/VISA falls over, that'll probably knock out my Barclaycard as well. In those instances I guess I'll just have to hope the retailer accepts Amex !!

Im thinking maybe the lloyds tsb cash account due to the visa debit card, good reviews on the internet banking, and overall not a bad bank to go with. Only down side is the withdrawals but there is so many lloyds cash machines where i live in my area. Does any one know if it's credit checked or scored? And would you recommend them? Kind regards

Natwest Step account comes with a Visa Debit card aswell, but with regards to the Lloyds account, they do a credit check, but I think they'd only decline you if there was a fraud marker on your credit files, and Im not sure what their stance is on bankruptcy

It can take quite a long time to get a new current account fully operational. What most people who are looking for a backup (or parachute) account want is somewhere to go if they need to abandon their original account (for whatever reason) at short notice.

Result! I did find Lloyds set my account and on-line banking up really quickly, so I would say their service is very good (better than Santander!) might try and upgrade my account later on, it serves its purpose for now :)
