I have just forked out £50 for a new print head for my MP760 due to the old one (4 years) getting severely clogged despite extreme efforts to clean it through.

I intend chucking all of the old inks and using just one manufacturer from here on as I believe that the problem was mixing different makes of ink (Whatever came along and was cheap).

So now I want ONE make that is good quality (Apart from Canon) AND cheap.

Any suggestions?

What make do YOU use.

Are the ink cartridges that old? I tend to use a random online place for cartridges (£15-18odd), had my old cannon pack up and just made sure the replacement cannon I bought took the same cartridges (an MP180, cost about £12 new & delivered on ebay without cartridges)

Only ever use the manufacturer's ink, you invalidate the warranty if you don't for starters. Plus, every 'alternative' ink I have ever used has clogged the print heads... even if you stick with one brand of alternative ink it'll clog up (going by my past experience).

But.... the repair only cost you £50! With my printer, branded cartridges cost £15 to £20 each (£80 for a set of inks). Imitation ones cost me £1.50 to £2.00 each (£8 for a set).

Even if I had to pay out £50 for a repair each time I got through a set of cartridges, it would still be cheaper to repair the damage each time.

In fact... the printer only cost £50 too. If I got through 2 sets of ink (on average) before encountering problems, it would be cheaper to bin the printer and buy a new one (which also comes with a set of ink) every time it failed.

EDIT: D'oh! I just realised I wouldn't be paying for a repair AND a new printer, so I could throw away the printer every time I bought a new set of cartridges... not every time I bought two sets!

If you've had the printer for 4 years, you have probably saved a hundreds pounds by getting the unbranded inks.

Yep That's my train of thought too.

But I imagine different manuf's might use different chemicals so it'll make sense to try to use one type only.

I decided to keep the MP760 running as carts are cheap and as a printer, few come near it for ability - Even 4 years later - without paying £150+

Generally Canon inks are very good in terms of the cheapest ranges you are looking at the Canon BCI 3 inks which work well. Epson popular ink cartridges include the T0711 - T0714 inks these also come in bundle packs so you also save more money looking at it that way. In terms of originals and compatibles it depends on what you are printing. If you print generally more photos i would recommend keeping to the originals. However if you are draft printing or just general household printing, compatibles are the way forward. Bearing mind sometimes the compatibles wont work with your printer, that's why most companies will offer a full refund and replacement guarantee as you might have to try more than one if your unlucky, but then you are saving alot of money once you get them going. Using Compatibles does not invalidate your warranty, due to English trading law the cartridge is a consumable product and is exactly the same cartridge as the original apart from the ink and replaced sponges, the shell and the electronics are the same.
