It appears the Apple Ipads in America are a lot cheaper than in the UK... Is it possible to buy an Ipad when in the US and use it over here and therefore save some decent money?

Only if you can get it past customs on the way back, and avoid VAT and import duty. Which, strictly speaking, would be wrong.....0
