Renault Garage Complaint - Advice Please

Hi All!

Im after some advice regarding my recent dealings with the servicing and MOT carried out on my Renault. If you were me, what would you do??

I booked my car (Megane 54 plate) into a Renault garage near my parents in Conrwall who I was visiting at the time to have a Gold level service and MOT carried out before going back home to Swindon. All was carried out along with some extra work required for the MOT, all to the tune of £400 snifters. On returning home, I noticed that my front bumper had become detached from where it joins in the wheel arch (my first warning sign!!), but decided not to get too concerned about it because there was no way I was driving back to Cornwall for them to sort out! (My local Dearlership were not interested!)

I week or so later I started to notice some excessive road noise coming from the front left wheel. Suspecting worn wheel bearings, but hoping for a cheaper fault, I took the car to my local Kwik Fit to check the wheel balances, in case that was the cause. It wasnt. My wife booked the car into our local independant garage to investigate (I am in the Forces and currently somewhere hot and dusty so couldnt sort it myself). Turns out that yes, the wheel bearings had gone but there were some other issues to deal with. Both front brake discs and pads were so badly worn they could have caused an accident, and certainly should never have passed an MOT, and when they plugged my car into their computer, it came up with 38 diagnostic faults!! 38!!!! How come this wasnt picked up during the service?? So, this has cost me another £400 to rectify, but what is making my blood boil is that all of these faults (worn wheel bearings, worn front discs, worn front pads, 38 diagnostic faults) SHOULD have been picked up during the service and MOT!!!

What can I do? I am stuck abroad pulling my hair out with rage! I have asked my wife to contact the garage to get the name of the manager and also the name and address of Customer Services for Renault UK, and also to speak to our local garage to see if they would do a letter stating all the faults that they found for us. I am also shocked that these people can hold a license to carry out MOTs if this is the standard of their work!! Does anyone know who I can contact in the MOT governing body world to raise my concerns with them?

This is what I intend to do. Write to both the manager of the dealership and Renault UK and let them know in no uncertain terms how I feel about their level of service, giving them a 14 day deadline to reply to me in writing about what they intend to do. If they do not reply, or meet with my satisfaction, then I am prepared to take it further (local MP and paper, Watchdog even!!). I also intend to write to the governing body for issuing MOTs (anyone help me out with addresses??) and inform them of my experiences.

To me, it seems like the dealership carried out a half ar$$£d service and MOT, which ulitmately, could have led to an accident. Not what you would expect from a main dealer!!

If anyone has any advice of what the best course of action would be for me, I would be very grateful!!

I think you need to calm down a little as it will make any representations you make more coherent.

The bumper could have detached itself, been nudged by another car whilst parked, or your wife did it without realising.

The wheel bearings and brakes will have been checked on a MOT but may have been fine on that day. Possibly not but then there is info on the back of the MOT about who to complain to.

The 38 faults could be faults from one event - have you clarified this or are they 38 separate faults. Most cars will have some faults stored in the log.

And finally did the Renault garage actually MOT the car or was it farmed out to a MOT station?

    They never call you back.
    Very frustrating.

As the excessive road noise occured weeks after the MOT, the brakes were probably within limits at the time.

The 38 faults didn't cause any concern before the garage mentioned them - perhaps they were all minor and didn't really need fixing. The 2nd garage use that as a way to get business.

The first garage may have just done the work that actually needed doing.

    This sounds like Dales Renault.
I have had experience of them. My car has not run properly since it was serviced last. Turned out they put the wrong grade of gearbox oil in.

if so,what does your receipt say regarding brake condition? pad wear isnt an MOT issue as long as it meets the required brake performance levels. 38 fault codes are irrelevant.if theres no fault light showing and no reported fault.why check for codes? a car can register fault codes for many reasons as simple as a slightly out of tolerance value from a sensor which will clear on restarts

i would get your facts straight before doing anything.i would also make sure the "independent garage " retains any replaced parts for your inspection
