moving overhead power supply to house
Hi
Currently our electriciy supply runs from a telegraph pole across the lane to an anchor point on our chimney. We are the only house on this connection.
We need to move the supply to do work on the chimney and rather
than just move it lower down eg on the eaves where it'll likely get in the way in the future we are leaning towards moving it underground.
So was wondering if anyone has any idea of likely costs or advice on this.
There is a telegraph pole on our side of the road so hopefully the cable could be run overhead to that and from there underground.
This way the underground route is around 15-20m and the road won't need digging up. It should be a resonably clear route to dig
i.e. it's just soil/lawn on top and no pipes etc (at least not ours!).
The pole our side does seem to carry power cables, just not to us,
it fact they run over the edge of garden so was wondering if there might be some quid pro quo.
A guy from scottish power is coming out next week and has already informed us that we'll need to meet the costs but was also wondering what a good route for negotiations might be.
Thanks
Mike

You will be looking at thousands from what I have seen posted on here before. You may be able to reduce the cost if you get your own contractor to dig the trench to their spec.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
4 Credit Card and 1 Loan PPI claims settled for £26k, 1 rejected (Opus).0 -
Im afraid that the bill would be quite substantial certainly i would suspect it would be in the low thousands.
What your suggesting however isnt just a service alteration but the undergrounding of an overhead supply.
Most DNO/RECs will use sub contractors to do ground works, so the dig might be easy, but it will still be costly. (most probably your electricity company will charge a standard charge per metre - sometimes they make money on it sometimes they lose).
As for the guy coming out on site... ask him what his opinions are. Let him know what works you are wanting to do to the chimney and whats the best and cheapest way to get your supply moved, even if only temporarily.0 -
Thanks to spiro and JC_Derby for their replies.
Sounds like it'll be a lot more than I thought (no change there).
