As has been mentioned its unlikely you will get a loan but keep saving - thats a good thing to do!!"If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
If you need something for just essay writing and light web-browsing.. why not go for a good condition second hand laptopn?
Something like this is twice as powerful as the computer I took to university:

But it is only 130 quid. IBM Thinkpads are also very well made and are light and durable. Sure, it's old, it's got a low spec and Windows XP Pro.. but it will work.
Spend a bit more and you get quite a decent spec:

Throw in some more RAM and you might have a chance of getting Windows 7 working on that.
edit: This one is a steal.. especially with a 17" screen -
Personally, i think the thinkpad is better if you plan to take it to the library and move it around a lot.
Remember - you can buy an external keyboard and mouse to make your life easier when essay writing0 -
Man up and start selling gear like all the other students.

Agree with the rest, a few hundred saved is more than enough to get yourself a second hand laptop or a netbook for your needs.Debts at LBM (May '08) £5760 - Lloyds CC £4260, Lloyds OD £1500;Debts as of May 28th 2011:Santander CC: £0.00Lloyds OD : £0.00DFW Nerd #1247 - Proudly dealt with my Debts

Talk to your school about it. It's possible that they may have funding available for hardship - I know universities offer this, it's possible six form/colleges do too - but you'll need to talk to your advisor. Several of my friends annoyed me by getting free laptops when I worked hard for a summer to get one = )Tim0

If your looking for a loan for a laptop and have budgeted to take into accounts monthly repayments etc why not try looking at the mobile broadband providers? I have a mid spec laptop with a 15gb download allowance from 3 for £35 a month over 2 years. That way you not only get the laptop you need but also a means to surf the web without paying an ISP. They do also have cheaper contracts available which may fit into your budget.
