Gas and Electric tariff at new house

I am hoping to move into my house soon. It was owned by an old lady who died and I am assuming that she didnt pay for her gas and electric via an online tariff. How do I go about arranging a switch to a new supplier?
I guess I will need to ask the executor (her daughter) who the current suppliers are and take it from there. Is there anything I ought to be considering/doing at this point. Havent actually exchanged yet but it shouldnt be long.
All advice gratefully received as I am new to all this.
thanks

The easiest thing is to call up the supplier you'd like to be on when you know your exact completion date and give them the details and they can usually arrange all the transfer from the current supplier for you. Alternatively speak to the executor to find out the current suppliers and ring them to see if they can offer you a good deal. Did you not receive a Property Information Form through the solicitors, that would have all the utility suppliers on it.

Sent hubby off to dig out the answer to similar to this fairly recently since he works for the eleccy bods we want to be with - contact the one you want to be WITH, with the expected date you'll be in, then contact them at the start with the initial meter reads and they should handle putting it through as a change of supplier/new customer switch at their end. (Hubby was convinced we'd have to ring the old suppliers and start with them before switching until I told him there was bound to be an easier process go away and find out abount it!)Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0

If your solicitor is half decent, they should send out a questionnaire for the seller to fill in. Ours included questions about who supplied gas, electric and telephone.0

I bought a house that was empty and had prepayment meters, I rang my current supplier where I was living (who I wanted to stay with) and they told me the procedure.
With prepayments you need to let them know earlier enough to get an engineer booked to re-set the meters.
With ordinary meters that have not been turned off it should just be a simple name change0 -
Havent received Property Information Form yet. Had a form that told me what was being left behind.....cooker etc. Maybe I will get the PIF later.Ellie
