  • I don't know if my broad Fife accent has anything to do with it, but I've only ever been asked if I'm English (usually with a doubtful tone, whilst on distant shores). But I've NEVER been asked if I'm British. Why so?

Any of the rest of you had the same type of thing?

I was born in Aberdeen, grew up in Ayrshire (5-17) then 3 years in Glasgow, 1 year in Norway, 5 years in Fife, 12 years in Gourock, and the last 20 years in Glasgow, so I have what I consider a "neutral" but certainly Scottish accent.
OH is Norwegian and was at Uni here and has lived here since 1970 so sounds totally Scottish. But his family call us "English", even he corrects them, some english people we got talking to on holiday thought we were Irish, and several people think our daughter, born and bred in Glasgow, is American!
    Really odd!!

every time ive been to the u.s i get mistaken for another nationallity...usually french or german!!! they dont even ask me they talk about me like i cant understand them....and loudly (well dont all americans talk loud?) so i tend to go into my more broader accent at this point ...like aye if ye ken whit a mean etc....i usually let this go on for a while then...let them carry on talking about me to my face...then let them know i have understood every ignorant word they have said and explained at least when they come over to scotland we attempt to understand them ...gives me a laugh if nothing else

I don't hate the English, just the English media.

That is exactly what i think.
I always put my nationality down as being Scottish. Having nothing against the English (although i have fab English neighbours that i wind up when they wear their football top:) ). Once had a taxi-driver in Las Vegas explain that he knew we were Scottish and not English cause the English never tip!
