I'm afraid that article makes two major mistakes. The first is that all money, right back to Pre-Roman times can be described by that definition. Gold and silver have little inherent value (except to the electronics and a few other industries). I mean, we could go back to a barter system, but I think the modern method works rather better. :)

The second, I take REAL issue with being an engineer. 'A device which produces more energy than is required to make it run' - Whaat? Haven't these people HEARD of the laws of thermodynamics??! That is quite clearly just not true. Or at least a distortion of the truth. To quote Homer Simpson, "In this house, young lady, we obey the laws of thermodynamics!"

Oh, and Pobby, you're correct in last month being one where people repaid more than they borrowed - but isn't this a good thing? Hopefully your and other luxury industries won't be hit too hard, but I think you were arguing in favour of people borrowing less earlier.

And interesting article from The Fool - but for every articel predicting disaster...

But hey, I'm no prophet. I wouldn't like to call it for definite either way.

I really do feel there is a change in sentiment with a lot of folks.I believe that some are coming to their senses and are facing up to what is happening.Wether or not this will help bring on a recession we will have to see.

This thread has crystallized for me what I hate about this country. I am in my mid 30's, and have never been a want it now sort of person. I rarely buy clothes because my old ones are fine. I have perfectly good t shirts that are 10 years old:D ! And yet the consumerism is gross. It is getting to the point where I do not want my DS to watch channel five in the morning now, because of the heavy advertising for toys and other things.

I also find it incomprehensible why people change their cars regularly. I have an old ford laguna. It works the body is fine etc, so why do I want to put myself into debt to buy a new one:confused:

The consumerism, debt culture etc, are all part of the reason why we are emigrating next year. We don't want to brind our children up here. And it is interesting to note that last year more people emigrated from the UK than came here. I guess I am not in such a minority after all.......

Thanks for the thread, it has made me feel that my view of life is not unique. PHEW!

Yes that is very interesting. So many I know would like to emigrate including myself. With less than 10 years to retirement we are hanging on for that.Spain is our chosen destination. It struck me that, when, last year 4 of us were sitting at about 9 o`clock,in a Spanish town centre, outside a cafe just how safe it felt. Not something I would do in the UK.
