Looking for a new printer... which to go for?

Was originally looking at the Epson SX515W but saw some new ones in the shops recently, mainly the SX425W....
What is best - theres so mant to choose from, have a old Epson at the moment, but playing up printing now so thought might aswell go for an all in 1... but still unsure

Do quite a bit of scanning, and would like to print out some nice photos etc so good quality too

  • I personally would buy a standalone scanner, and a standalone printer One dies the other is still useful just an Idea

I'd advise you not to get the SX425W. There are no compatible ink cartridges available for it. A set of Epson cartridges will cost about £30. The printer costs £60...

If you want an all-in-one here's an Epson for £40 including delivery. It's not modern but you won't be paying an arm and a leg every time you run out of ink.

Compatible inks here. They may be available cheaper elsewhere.

The Kodak All-In-One devices seem Okay but I have not actually tried one yet - and the ink cartridges save you a fortune.

I will be buying a Kodak when my Epson ink runs out because a set of 6 new original Epson ink cartridges cost me more than £50 a time - ouch !

Kodack cartridges may be cheap but it's also very small and runs out all the time which is bad if you print a lot, if you don;t preint much they are ok.

I would recomend cannon, a 5 seperate ink printer device. You can usually get compatibles on the net for £2 a cart.

I would always look at the price of ink cartridges before you get a printer if your thinking of getting an Epson look at the printers that take the T0711-T0714 cartridges as they are generally the cheapest cartridges and if you can get the compatibles working in your printer they can be bought for as little as £1.99 from some reputable ink cartridge companies. Same goes with the Canon's and the

3 inks they are cheap and produce good quality prints. Kodak is the in printer at the moment just because it's all over the adverts although the cartridges aren't pricey either :j

I looked at the Kodaks, but the reviews on amazon were pretty hit and miss. Basically if it works, it's brilliant but build quality seems a bit suspect.

Having said all that, the kodak 3 series did win the comaprison test for all round ability on the Gadget show recently.

Unless you are going to spend a lot of time, effort and money:

    1. Getting the photographs out of your camera in basic electronic (RAW) format
    2. Getting your PC monitor calibrated correctly
    3. Using dedicated photo software to produce the best possible colours/tints/saturation/balance, etc, etc
    4. Using top quality photographic printer paper
    5. Making a test print each time

...........then to be honest the answer to your question is to buy the one with the cheapest ink or refill the cartridges yourself.

Buy a separate printer and scanner, not a combined one.

  • I have decided to stick with genuine cartridges for my Stylus SX415. The cheapest I have seen through Amazon is £27.27 free p&p for a multipack from 7dayshop.
