Credit card refund advice

I purchased tickets for myself and family to travel to Goa in november this year by credit card. However due to a serious illness in the family we had to travel to brasil on an emergency for 2 weeks in september.
Due to the expense we are unable to go on our planned holiday to Goa. I requested a refund from from the airline (Qatar airways), but was told that as it was a promotional ticket I could only get the taxes back. I will end up losing almost a thousand pounds. To change the dates to next year it is an extra £714.
I contacted my travel insurance company and was told that my claim was not valid as I had gone to Brasil well before the date I was going to Goa even though it was a family member who was unwell.
Then I spoke to my credit card issuer and was told that I could not reclaim the money from them and had to speak to my travel insurance company.
I am probably going to lose the money, and am looking for advice.

Part of the Furniture 10,000 Posts Name Dropper
    Forumite
you will not be able to reclaim from credit card as this protection is for when the item purchased is not provided so that does not apply
Qatar are not alone, the majority of tickets, with the exception of expensive flexible ones, are non-refundable
From your insurance viewpoint you are simply changing your mind so not covered there

Is the accomodation paid for/refundable? how much extra will this holiday cost you if you chose to go?

    Your options will be
    a) go on the holiday
    b) accept the refund of taxes and chalk it up to experience
    c) pay to change the dates
  • Thanks caz3121 for the advice
    £714 to change the dates

I will probably accept the refund of the taxes
