not arrived and being threatened

just wondering if anyone could offer some advice?
This is for a friend who is really worrying and knows what she should have done but didnt.
An item was sent royal mail ,buyer paid normal post and they are saying it hasnt arrived. she never got reciept(silly but done now).
there is a bit of a previous issue and friend thinks it may have arrived but no proof either way.
my friend is poorly with depression /anxiety and not in position to refund if it has arrived. thing is can buyer do anything about it? they are threatening all sorts. friend would refund at a later date if it really hasnt arrived.
sorry it doesnt make much sense.

If paid by cheque as you say, the only thing buyer can do is fill "item not received" through ebay and I believe ebay been known to refund buyers and then chase the money from sellers, although just a couple of years ago the answer would be- if you paid by cheque and item doesn't arrive you're screwed.
How long has it been since the item was posted?

thanks,it wasnt through ebay.
it was just one person to another. its been 3 weeks.
i nearly sure its the buyer causes trouble as they had a previous falling out.
Its just my friend wouldnt hurt anyone and its been really upsetting them. thanks for repyling

If there was 'previous' surely it would be sensible to send the item recorded?

Guess that's spilt milk now; did she get any form of receipt? Even a receipt for her payment?

You could go back to the Post Office with that and although unlikely, they may be able to trace it and at the very least it would show the buyer she is being proactive

The seller is responsible for the item right up to the point of delivery. It doesn't matter if the buyer did or didn't pay recorded, insured etc as the deal is not concluded until the book is in their possession. With it being a private sale it's really up to the seller now if she believes the buyer or not, and short of a small claims there is not a lot the buyer can do about it. Personaly I would take responsibility for the lost book and refund. Lesson learned to get at least a certificate of postage, which is free, next time.

hi yes we both know it was silly not sending item recorded.
i was just trying to find out some info.
we all make mistakes and a lesson learnt.
