How do you stop programs running automatically on Start up?
I have so many that open when I turn my computer on that it takes 5 minutes for it all to load up!

Start>run>Msconfig Then untick the ones you don't want. Or you can usually just amend the options/preferences from within each program0

Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

cc cleaner gives you the option to stop start up items or also windows startup inspector gives you the option to get an overview of what the hell each program is!
also worth checking in start -> all programs -> startup.
any stuff in there that looks like rubbish just delete!0 -

Why would you want to download a programme that does what you can do yourself by running one command?albertross wrote:

For those that aren't scared easily there is HijackThis. Make sure you are certain what a startup entry is before deleting it.
On my PC, MsConfig lists 8 entries at startup and HijackThis reported 26 items.0 -

msconfig and autoruns just don't compare, autoruns has far more hidden/secret startup entries available, which is where all the nasty bho's and viruses hide. The company is now owned by Microsoft, so it is likely that future developments will keep pace with future changes to Windows.
msconfig is fine for simple stuff, but autoruns is a complete solution, as opposed to OTT.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
MSCONFIG doesn't tell you a lot about the entry, so whilst you may have 20 different Symantec entries (for example) you don't know which ones you "need" and which aren't
But for the poster, if your computer is taking 5 minutes to boot up then it's more likely that you have a) a very old computer or b) some other unlying problem that turning off entries in msconfig won't fix0
