Is extra car warranty worth it?

Were looking to buy a used car. We are thinking of a 02-03 Saab or VW passat.
We've had problems before, usually a year down the line. Eg the cylinder head gasket on out W reg Passat went after having it 8 months.

We were thinking of getting a separate warranty to help cover some of the bigger things that could go wrong.
We looked at warrantydirect.com, they quoted £400 odd for one that seems to cover a lot.

I'm just not convinced they are worth the money and they way they are written makes it seem like parts are covered but aren't really covered.

Does anyone have any good experiences? Thanks in advance

On a car that age why not spend some of the money on an AA (or similar) check.

Alternatively find out what goes wrong with your particular car (owners forums) and check if the warranty covers those things. (For example:- is the turbo prone to exploding, is that covered?)
