Credit balance in gas account
Hi
I am looking for some help, I am currently £770 in credit on my gas account it is based on an actual meter reading and not an estimate. I have read on the website that your account is reviewed at end of payment year and over £100 refunded however this will be December can I ask for this to be refunded before this? Anyone had any success with requesting this. Im with British Gas
Thanks

I had the same thing with EDF a couple of months ago (mind you it was only for £45, not a nice big sum like yours!). I phoned customer services, explained the situation and they refunded the money within five working days. You say that the previous bill was an actual, therefore the money is yours and there is no reason for the supplier to keep hold of it (other than to earn interest!).0

You can ask for it, whether you get it and how quickly is another question.
If you do, expect your monthly amount collected via DD to rise to cover the forthcoming winter months and higher consumption.
If you don't like paying for what you haven't used, ask to be billed quarterly on receipt of bill. If they have accurate meter readings (which you can supply if necessary) then you will only pay for what you've already used

Hi hobo123 - Unless you have recently adopted a different and very economic lfe style, it appears that you D/Debit payments are far higher than the amount required to clear your annual Bill
The way D/D's work is that you build up a credit balance over the summer, that will contribute to your increased costs over winter, so:
Phone your supplier and ask them to calculate your annual bill based on your Kw consumption over the last 12 months, and agree a level of monthly D/D's to pay for it. If your Electric is from the same supplier, ask for the annual Kw consumption on this as well
Then also agree with them just how much of your present £770 credit should be refunded, whilst leaving sufficient credit toward your winter Bill.
Armed with the Annual Gas & Elec consumption figures, visit a couple of Switch sites for comparitive costs from other suppliers0 -
Hi
Thanks for your help with this, the problem arose a couple of years ago when my heating wasnt working properly so had to be left on full constantly to get any heat this resulted in gas account going into debit and direct debit being increased to £175 per month this has obviously now been cleared and my direct debits have been gradually decreased so it is now £67 per month. I have contacted them and asked for £500 to be refunded that way I still have £270 in account to cover extra usage over winter months, I was very surprised when they replied the following day to say it would be refunded to my bank in the next 5 days.
Must be honest was a lot easier than I thought it would be!
Thanks again for your replies0 -
Yeah you get the refund if you have been a good customer with them. That money would come inhandy for winter bills.0
