Tax refund disappeared, please help!

Hi

I'm really hoping someone can help.

I was made redundant on 1st June 2010 at 3 months pregnant and starting claiming JSA immediately, I was placed on contribution based which meant handing over my P45 to the benefits office. My P45 showed earnings of £2630 and tax paid of £310 which I assumed I would be refunded once my claim stopped.
I have now stopped my JSA claim as I am due to move over to maternity allowance (which is non taxable) and have just recieved a new P45 from the benefits office which states my earnings as £3826 and tax paid of £92.

Can someone explain where the £310 I paid has disappeared to?? The benefits office has kept parts 2 and 3 of my original P45 so if I was to use the tax refund claim form from HMRC I have only my copy as proof of what I paid (part 1)

I'm really grateful for any help you can give as I was really relying on this tax refund to help with the baby things, apparantly I am not entitled to anything other than MA until the baby is born

Thanks

you have to apply for it. it doesn't get refunded automatically.
but seeing as the tax was paid in the current tax year, i wouldnt think you could apply for it until the end of the tax year as it's possible that you could return to work and so still be eligable to pay tax.
    if that makes sense lol

Thanks for the reply Nannytone, I have downloaded the form to claim tax back however it says I need to include parts 2 and 3 from my P45, the only parts 2 and 3 I now have are the ones the benefit office have issued that state I've paid £92 tax which is wrong. Do I send this anyway?

    I'm so confused!! :(

meant to add that on the form for claiming it back it asks if you know that you definitely won't return to work before the end of the tax year, I won't be as the baby will only be 4 months old at the most by that stage so in that aspect it should be ok to claim
  • The figures from your P45 will be the same as your final payslip if you still have this and do not have your Employee copy of P45. Also because it is current tax year and you have been receiving taxable benefits sometimes a refund is not shown as a refund, it just means you may have paid less tax on your benefits than what you would normally? How much was your JSA and how many weeks was it paid, I'll try and work it out for you
  • Hi Joanne

Thanks for the help, I have sent off my last payslip in order to claim MA but I do still have a copy and also have my copy of the P45.

I recieved £65 per week in JSA from 1st June 2010, the last payment I recieved on the 8th October 2010, so a total of just over 18 weeks.

    Thanks again
