We did this for our wedding and wasn't much hassel for £50
  • I don't want to pour cold water on this but there is a downside. I'm getting married in 2 weeks and we looked at this list, but settled for John Lewis because although you get £50 of vouchers your guests have to pay if they want to get your gift delivered. I think it might be £5 per gift. Whereas John Lewis people can buy online and it all arrives with you after the event and they don't have to pay extra for this.

So it might be false economy because if I was buying a gift off that list I would then spend less to make up for the delivery costs...

But do people actually HAVE to buy from the list? we are getting married and didn't want - still don't want a gift list but would happily sit and answer their wedding questions as I love talking about my wedding anyway! But do you still get the £50 gift card if no one actually buys anything off your list?

This is the easiest £50 quid I ever made, the missus and I actually did this as far back as April this year.

We made an appointment and said we were getting married in July '06, at the appointment they just check what the wedding details are (remember to take your wedding bands off if you're already married!)

The wedding advisor gave us a barcode reader and we wandered around the store and scanned everything we wanted on the 'list'. This is then loaded onto the computer for your 'guests' to look at.

On completing all this we were given a nice freebie bag with the usual flyers from local photographers and hire cars, but there were some rather nice chocolates and vouchers for free food and coffee in the store (we used them straight away, scanning worked up an appetite!)

We were given out £50 card with the money already loaded, so after having a free bite to eat we went straight to the china section and bought some nice Denby China we'd had our eye on.

    Thanks Debenhams!!

After we set up our list no-one bought off it (no wedding you see) and still got the £50, but that was back in April, they might have sussed out by now people are doing this.

Me and my now-husband did this for our wedding a couple of months ago.

We got our £50 Giftcard straight away, and started scanning. During our visit we received 2 champagne glasses and a crystal photoframe just for putting x amount of Doulton/Edinburgh Crystal stuff on our list.

I did think at the time "Couldn't anyone do this and pretend they're getting married?" and it appears the answer is Yes!

If guests want the gifts delivered, it will cost them an added £3.50 - but of course they can just buy in-store and avoid this charge.

All guests also got 20% a visit to the instore restaurant too, plus we got the same plus free capuccinos.

All in all, I think its a pretty good deal from Debenhams! :money:
We're all pawns in the game of life!!
  • Drat. My husband and I already registered with them for real 2 years ago. Bet you they still have our details on there. We didnt get anything when we registered the first time. (meaning, any free stuff like champagne flutes or coffee or any of that)
