Why do people list things on ebay as 'new' when they are clearly not?

I've received 2 items in the post today, 1 (an item of kids clothing) described as new, has clearly had a lot of use, worn and bobbled all over. The other item is from a business seller, at least this one is in great condition but still clearly not new - there is dirt inside screw fixings and had hairs on - but still a bargain for the price I paid. Why do people lie? Do they think we're all stupid? It really annoys me!!

  • You also get the opposite, where buyers expect things to be like new, when the Seller has specifically said they are used.
  • Yeah I find it annoying when buying clothes that are supposedly "new without tags", which in my opinion usually really means "I have worn the item a few times but still looks kind of new so I'm not going to list it as used as then I will get less money for it."

If it says 'BNWT' and I don't see the tag on the pic I normally ask if it actually has tags, and you bet the answer often is 'it fell off'....

Often you can tell from the pic on the listing, you can clearly see the tag is not where it's supposed to be, some stores have really big, red tags, probably to stop people from wearing them and returning.

Like OP it puzzles me. If I bought something BNWT and I got BNWOT I would definitely neg,let alone used instead of new!

Sally, I don't know what you're insinuating, the 1st item had "never worn" in the title, "new" in item specifics, and the description said that they were a gift that they couldn't use as their child was sensitive to the fabric. I don't mind buying items in good used condition if they are described as such. But this was something in quite bad condition, the fabric has worn thin in places. I contacted seller and they have replied to say that they were only used for a short time, which is why they were described as 'new' (eh?) and the bobbling is probably from being washed for sale (yeah right). It beats saying "I'd lie to my own granny if she gave me 99p" I suppose.

I think she's just making a general complaint about people expecting more from something used than she thinks they should. I don't think she's suggesting anything untoward.

This forum is getting tiresome. Too many know it alls. For the OP, yes it must be that some people think buyers are stupid.
But BNWOT does not necessarily mean worn. I see boxes of new items with no tags on a frequent basis at sales.

you'll be able to get a refund through PP or eBay if you start a dispute, I think you may have to pay for return postage though.

Don't take comments personally, this is really a seller-focused forum, and some people feel quite negative towards their buyers for some reason.

I completely agree with the OP. It's a question I've asked myself - and it's not just clothes. It often amuses me that a certain eBayer buys second-hand, used DVDs and sells them on a week later as "new and unused". A quick glance at their buying feedback of last week's used items somehow has a very high correlation with the items they are selling as new this week!
