Regarding your post at # 9 I have to confess that I don’t know what a self assessment short form is. It didn’t exist in my days.
However, a Tax Return is a Tax Return and definitely carries a legal requirement for it to be completed.
You must complete the Tax Returns but you should find a UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) consisting of 10 digits on the forms.
Use that UTR to register for on-line access and do your returns on line in due course.
Whilst you will have to wait to be sent a password that will be so much quicker than posting anything to HMRC and waiting for a reply.

I went to the tax office today with all the stuff they sent and she gave me the instuction forms that were indeed missing. I couldn't see an adviser as it was appointment only and I only have 6 working days left so took the instructions and did the forms there in the waiting room. The reception person was helpful and dated the forms for internal mail
Thank you to everyone who answered, I was panicking as I try so hard to do things right. I now have to wait around 6 weeks for this years to be processed and 12 weeks for the duplicate 2008-2009 one according to them and if I don't hear from them to chase it up again.
I will have registered online by then as I now have the magic 10 digit number
Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.
