A very strange telephone call from my bank

Hi all,
I've just had a very strange telephone call from my bank, can't explain it and I'm hoping that maybe you can shed some light on it for me? Around 10:30 this morning I received a telephone call from one of the managers at my local bank branch and because I was suspicious of who he was (it could have been anyone calling) I asked him to confirm who he was, what he wanted and a few other things that proved to me he was who he said he was. Anyway, he told me that he was calling to confirm that I was now set up as private banking customer and that he was going to be my "relationship manager" and that he was calling to personally introduce himself. I was really concerned by all this because I told him I have never requested private banking and have never had any dealings with that side of things and yet he was adamant that I was a new private banking customer. I told him he must have made some sort of mistake and he said no, that all my details were correct and he then said that I'd been moved from personal to private banking and I told him this couldn't have happened because I don't believe I meet the requirements for private banking i.e, I don't earn £75,000 per year and only have savings of around £8,500 in total. He asked me to confirm my account number and sort code which I did and he then said that the bank can offer private bank accounts at their discretion but I still insisted that I hadn't requested it and didn't believe I met the conditions for it.
He seemed to go a bit quiet on me after saying this and he then said that he'd go and check a few things and call me right back. I wasn't off the telephone for more than a few minutes when he returned my call saying that there had been some sort of mistake and that I wasn't a private banking customer at all, to just forget that he called and not think anymore about it. He said he'd close the accounts that had been opened on my behalf and that if I wanted to make a complaint I was more than welcome to do so and I could use his name and he gave me his personal telephone number. I have to be honest, I'm not sure what's just happened. Do I go in branch and find out more or do I just leave it? I don't really know what he's trying to tell me and I still can't make sense of what he was saying in our conversation because it's all out of the blue and I was just so overwhelmed and shocked because this is the first time my bank has ever called me for any reason. I have never dealt with private banking and I've never requested private banking either. What does he mean by close the accounts they were opening on my behalf? surely I need to sign to open an account? thank you for your help.

it looks more likely to be a mistake than a potentially harmful call, but then again you can never be too careful these days.
just keep monitoring your account, for piece of mind u can go to the branch and give his details for them to verify if he works for the bank or not...0 -

Thank you,
I just checked my account there and everything seems to be in order. I did however receive an email this morning explaining to me the benefits of private banking and I did find that somewhat strange as I never requested it. This email was sent before I received the telephone call and I'm just hoping that nothing wrong has happened and that everything is in order, just a little concerned by what's happened really.0 -
are you natwest or rbs?0

Hi,
I like to think of myself as British, that's my first nationality and then Scottish second. I just foud it somewhat strange to be contacted as I was about something I'd never requested. I did speak to my bank a few days ago saying that I was thinking about closing my account and moving to a different bank but I'm not sure if this has anything to do with this telephone call? who knows, I'm just worried incase I've been put in a "situation" and I don't want that at all.0 -

Wel i wa just wondering if they are pushing his for the scottish accounts or trying to keep some English account holders. I am not really sure what they are up to. It could well be becasue you said you were moving they are trying to keep you.
Nothing to worry about. If however you have a large overdraft that might be pushed to became a loan. Apart from that unless you have complicated affairs nothing to worry about. Also you will be sent a few bits of information about their latest credit card. You might even get a call from the bm every so often. A new debit card is on the way to you.
Unless they want you to pay for it, which they might.0 -
Natwest / RBS have recently made a bit of a hash of their private banking arrangements. I got an email recently saying I no longer qualified to have a personal banker as - in their words - I no longer met the criteria.
I replied pointing out that I did - that my income and savings satisifed their criteria - and what was going on?
They replied apologising.
Seems their systems spewed out some bum data.0 -

Hi,
It just seems really strange to me that after all these years they just come out and offer me a private bank account without it being requested or even enquired about. I've had a "basic" bank account with RBS ever since I started banking and I think they refer to it as a "Key Account". This account meets my needs perfectly and as I've never wanted a chequebook, overdraft or credit of any sort I've felt that this account does what I want and that's what counts. I do keep a fair amount of money in this account (£8,500) and after speaking with my bank in branch recently I told them I was intending to move most of this so maybe that's why I got the call? I'm still trying to make sense of what happened this morning because the man I spoke with was very comfortable and well spoken the first time he called and on his return call he was very nervous and quiet, barely said two words to me.0 -

Its probably their computers unlinking the English RBS accounts. They might have been on one system.0
