"Out of Memory" icon

Hi
Probably showing lack of knowledge, but this icon keeps popping up and disrupts the internet. It can't be a lack of memory space as our storage usage is minuscle. Also this morning the entire screen went blank, yet running mouse pointer over showed there were clickable things underneath (sorry have absolutly no technical knowledge or
"speak"). I ran both security checks which said they detected nothing. So I thought I'd turn it off on the off chance it could sort itself out. An hour later turned it on and as you see is working perfectly again. Any idea if it was a one off laptop/internet blip or something that will reoccur again?

The term 'Out of memory' doesn't actually mean you have run out of memory. What the message is telling you is that something is trying to assign/write itself into an area of memory that doesn't exist. Essentially it's attempting to put eggs in a 6 egg capacity box but trying to put one egg in a 7th position when one doesn't exist, irrelevant of how many eggs it is actually putting in.

Thanks Mista, will this harm my laptop or can I ignore it?

It won't do it any harm, it's just a software glitch, usually through lazy coding or a bug.

It shouldn't happen, so it needs dealing with, are you on a particular site when it happens?

install and run ccleaner to cleanup temp files.

post a hijackthis log, do a full scan with malwarebytes after updating it, and post your install ram and commit charge from task manager, performance.

resetting internet explorer to defaults may help, tools, internet options, advanced, reset.

what security scans have you done?

    Hi
It said "Run out of memory line 47"
I ran McAFee and Avast. Seems to be fine at the moment. I have zero ability with laptops (any technology), I'm sure they hate me as much as I hate them. I'll ask my son in law to take a look at your ideas and try them out. I dare'nt, it will probably explode on me!

Oh sorry, yes my son says it come up when he goes on You Tube and similar sites of motion graphics. Has only just told me this. Given me another excuse to warn him of the dangers of the internet!

It could be a dodgy plugin. It might be worth visiting adobe.com and seeing if you need to update flash player.
