Privacy Settings: How do you protect your email from being used

I recently received an email addressed to "sindersoot". This is the only site I use that username on. They obviously had my correct email address.
The email was from a person in Russia wanting to be my "friend", stating they had found my name on some Friends for Life site or something similar! Total rubbish and untrue, never been on any site or similar!
Anyone any idea how they would have been able to access my details?
Just wondering if I don't have privacy settings set correctly???
