Card authorised with only 2 numbers!

I was using my credit card to pay for a meal and due to lack of light couldn't see if the first number had registered and so put it in again. However this then gave me 2 numbers which were wrong so I cancelled without putting anymore in. Now, surely you have to enter all 4 numbers in the correct order to get a transaction authorised? I did only two that were wrong and yet just checked my statement online and it has gone through! Surely this should not be possible. Anybody else had this happen?

I can't think of any way this could happen."We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0 -

Gosh! So you only entered 2 numbers but you didn't think those 2 numbers were correct so you deleted those 2 numbers and entered another 2 numbers? Why did you only enter 2 numbers and cancel, and not enter 4 numbers and push the green button? The 2 numbers you entered on the 2nd attempt, were they completely different 2 numbers to the 2 numbers you entered on the 1st attempt or were they the same 2 numbers? Usually if you enter 2 numbers and press the green button, those 2 numbers won't be accepted and they'll have you enter a further 2 numbers so that would equal 4 numbers then the transaction would be authorised. Surely the transaction cannot be authorised with only 2 numbers, unless their machines were broken and something weird and dodgey went down with those 2 numbers. Odd that, I don't think I've ever heard of someone entering 2 numbers and it being accepted. Perhaps you should discuss the 2 numbers situation with your card issuer? After entering those 2 numbers, did they have you sign any receipts, maybe they put it through as chip & signature transation? We’ve had to remove your signature.
