Tiling around boxed in pipes

Hi,

I've created a frame to box in some pipes in a cloakroom toilet, which I've got to cover and then tile over. Because I need to keep the boxing as shallow as narrow as possible, I was going to cover it with thinnish ply and then tile over that. Will the ply accept tiles OK?

Cheers.

Yes, that will work fine. Will you need access to the pipes? Do not cover stop !!!!.

if you need to access the pipes, tile the wood first, then use 4 x screws with cups.

    like these.

Yeah, I'd planned to put in a couple of access ports like that.

    Thanks

    What does "thinnish" mean?

I've done similar with MDF in the past and used tubbed tile adhesive on it with no problems.
Think you may have been lucky then.
.......is to cut out an access panel in the boxing-in and cover with a tile held on by silicone - never tried this but if you need access you just cut your way in with a stanley knife and stick back with silicone when your done.
Yes works well, done this many times and written about it on here before too.

    Cheers

hidden roller catches also work, but magnetic catches are cheaper and easier to install.

There will be too much flex in that imo. You would need to frame it and support it well with frequent cross pieces. The weight of the tiles and adhesive could make it bow slightly unless it was well framed.

What do you mean may have been lucky?

I boxed in waste pipe in my ensuite recently and didn't know whether to leave access. There wasn't really a way to do it nicely, but then thought that a lot of waste pipes go under the floor anyway and are tiled in so just went without access.
