can i check if a port is working on my laptop?

Hey there,
I want to plug my laptop to my tv to watch the free live videos on betfair. I am having trouble with this, it says that the wires are not connected from my s-video port. So I have a feeling that the s-video port does not work, is there a program that I can use to check if it is working and also is it possible for me to fix it?

Just a guess, but have you changed the output from the laptop's screen to the S-Video?
It's usually a combination of Fn-F5 IIRC, and it steps through Laptop - SVideo - Both0
