Odd failure to power up problem - Lenovo Thinkpad T61

Ok, this has started to drive me nuts was wondering if anyone has any ideas.
I'm on my 3rd replacement machine in a month (hard drive transplant) and still seeing the issue.
Basically I seem to randomly have my laptop refuse to even attempt to boot, the battery will be at 99% or it'll be on mains power or both. If I plug the mains lead in two little LEDs light up (AC and battery charging/full). Then when i hit the power button both lights go out and the thing is dead.
Will stay dead till I remove battery and mains then the little LEDs will come back on but it then dies in the same way when I hit the power button.
I've hyad some luck getting it to come back to live leaving it plugged into the mains for a few hours and it'll come back as if nothing has happened but very frustrating being randomly without my machine for a few hours at a time when it throws a power tantrum.
Not sure if its relevant but seems most prone to happening when its been recently undocked -I've undocked it, been sat in a meeting using it and had it die before my (and everyoen else's) eyes.
Power adapter and docking station have both been changed too....
Any ideas?
