HM digestive biscuits

I have found a recipe for digestives that I would like to try that needs oatmeal. I couldn't find any in Asda yesterday but I have ordinary porridge oats. I thought I might try whizzing them down in the food processor and then using them. Has anyone else tried this?

I haven't tried that, but have often thought it would work ;) I'm surprised you couldn't find oatmeal at Asda. Tesco stock it with their baking supplies rather than the cereals.I made digestives once from one of Nigella Lawson's books - How To Eat I think it was, they were very good.

Bearing in mind that I haven't tried these yet!

    4oz medium oatmeal
    4oz wholemeal flour
    2oz caster sugar
    1/4 tsp salt
    1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
    3oz butter or marg
    1 small beaten egg

Mix oatmeal, flour, sugar, salt & bicarb. Rub in butter/marg, add egg. Put dough on surface sprinkled with oatmeal. Roll out to 1/2"" thick, cut in 3" rounds. Put on greased baking sheet, put in preheated oven (180C) for 10 - 15 mins.

Whoops! I only looked in the cereals part:rolleyes: never mind I'll have a try with the oats as I've bought them.
  • Erm....... Isn't Reddy Brek oatmeal?
The quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...
  • Should work, i had an American roommate at uni, we couldnt find oatmeal for the much needed oatmeal raisin cookies so we whizzed some up in a food processor and they turned out fine :)

No it isn't, not sure what Readybrek is but it bears no resmblance to oatmeal.
Oatmeal comes in various grades - pinhead, medium and coarse(I think). It is crunchy, whereas Readybrek is powdery pap. I always understood that Americans refer to our porridge oats as oatmeal.

I tried these today and can report that:

    whizzing oats works

the biscuits were pronounced "nice" by fussy DD and "a bit cakey" but "more digestivey after being dunked" by OH

Conclusions reached - I will cook them again, using whizzed oats, but will roll the dough thinner. Hopefully they will then be less "cakey"!
