Cheap/free banking when travelling internationally

My partner and I are off traveling for a few months. We'll mostly be in Australia but will spend a bit of time in Singapore and Thailand. What is our best option for banking? We should be able to use credit cards for most things but will need some cash. Is it worth opening a local bank account or are there any UK banks without fees for international cash withdrawals?
