UK Current Accounts Query

Hi folks.

I have been banking with Halifax since early last year and have gone overdrawn only a couple of times. I now live with my partner, have our own private rented house and have a baby boy. Due to past credit problems I had no choice but to opt for an easycash account and a visa electron card. I have a 10 pound 'shadow' overdraft on my account and my credit rating is increasing slowly but surely (its a long process I know) I do also admittadly have a few defaults from a couple of years ago and really want to upgrade to a current account now. With my wages and increasing credit score and being on the electoral role I am wondering if I will get accepted for a proper 'fully functional' account with someone. Another reason to move is the local Halifax branch has moved to another town completely so it's a bit of a ball ache should I want to deposit a cheque or cash etc.
We have total earnings with benefits/tax credits etc in excess of 1700 pound a month. But I know due to my previous credit problems it can prove hard to get a proper account. Are there any banks in the UK with more leniant acceptance rates should I choose to apply?

Many thanks for reading the post and for you replies in advance.

try to get a basic account with natwest. they might be able to upgrade you in 1 years time.

Santander is also sometimes known for being easier banks.

it depends on your own personal experience.
