trying to set up wpa2 for wireless access.

Hi all,

I have my router set up at the moment on wep and want to change it to the more secure system wp2. No problem chaning the settings on my netgear dg83 router, I just tick the wpa2 option but keep the same 26 digit key I have used for wep.

The desktop is connected to the routher through ethernet and works ok. The problem is I can't get my xp laptop to connect to the router though wireless. I select my network properties in the laptop and select wp2 using the same key as I did for wep, and though it sees the router it won't connect.

I then have to go back to using the wep again to get my laptop to connect. Am I doing something wrong here such as not using a different longer key?

thanks for any help

XP didnt have WPA2 installed untill SP3 if you see the WPA2 option then you must have the patch or SP3 installed.

I would delete all wireless network profiles (somewhere in the network center settings) then manually type in all the info as a new network profile or by manually connecting to it.

Yes. In fact as its basically random, its better than using something that can be found in a dictionary.

Go into Wireless Networks, Advanced and remove your network from the list (you'll find it set to automatically connect). Search for new wireless lans, connect to yours and pop the key in.

One other thing to check is the encryption - with full support you can chose between TKIP and AES. I think it's AES that is newer and possibly your XP machine isn't supporting that.

Most modern routers can be set up to support both WPA and WPA2 so you could try the XP machine with WPA while leaving the newer one on WPA2. In fact either will be good enough to deter a casual hacker. Come to that given the number of wide open APs I can see near me (I recently succumbed to getting an Android smartphone and had a wander while running the WarDrive app - a real eye opener) WEP probably would be good enough anyway as there is plenty of even lower hanging fruit.
