The issue does now seem to be getting dealt with, so kudos to British Gas for that.

This business of the cashback being paid to the energy account seems to be a common misconception as that's what the BG man said as well. I'm convinced the scam here must involve a website like Quidco as the other companies I'm being signed up to have said it is probably this, and they are all companies that offer cashback through external sites too. I've asked BG to see if they can find out more about the transaction from the side of cashback, etc, and if they can give me more information I will try to alert the site in question and hopefully that will put a stop to this whole business.

On the issue of contacting the current supplier - I have been told to just let British Gas deal with it, and this is probably a good idea for two reasons. 1 - It probably keeps things a lot simpler if one company coordinates things. 2 - Apparently if EDF make an erroneous transfer request then it might get rejected anyway due to the fact that the surname still matches.

Did he also mention that any application to switch supplier will also usually result in both a 'sorry you are leaving' letter from the outgoing supplier to the current account holder as well as a 'welcome' letter from the new supplier?
And that those letters will include a customers right to cancel any switch request, resulting in no cashback being paid?

Oh, and did I mention that suppliers should not discuss the account with anyone other than the account holder (unless the account holder agrees otherwise)
Remind me, are you the account holder? Errr... that'll be a no then.

My point is, your plan, as Roy Walker would say, is good, but it's not right.

No free coconut this time, I'm afraid.

yes but as with all the spam emails flying around offering ***is enlargements and the like if someone is repetedly trying this on it will work out with them getting paid on a few occasions.

I get the impression there is a fair portion of dopey individuals out there who don't open/understand/get around to dealing with post like that.

At a guess for every 10 times your ID thief slammer tries it on he might well expect to end up with two free coconuts on average :)
