Tax Credits - what happens if you miss a deadline?

Hi everyone
Myself and my partner have our own business and claim working tax credits.
We gave a figure for our estimated income back in July and need to get the correct figures to HMRC by 31st October.
We haven't managed to get all the accounts done as yet and try as we might it's not looking likely that we will get them sorted before the deadline.
Can anyone tell me what happens if we miss the deadline? I have tried phoning them today but it just cuts me off everytime, I guess they must be incredibly busy!
Thanks very much.

Hmmm...I think I may have made a mistake...
We provided HMRC with an estimated figure by 31st July as requested...am I right in thinking we have until 31st January 2011 to get the actual calculated figure to them?
That would be a huge relief if I'm right!0 -
Are you talking about renewing your tax credit claim or your self-assessment tax return?
Renewal of Tax Credits
Self-Assessment Tax Return0 -
Thanks for the reply
It's the tax credits I'm talking about.
I've found this deadline page which tells me it's the 31st Jan 2011 but I'm sure I had a letter which said 31st January.0 -
Woo! I've just managed to get through to them on the phone (posted the last message while I was on there) and it's confirmed, if we were doing it in writing it would be the 31st October but as we do it online we have until 31st January to get it sorted.:j:rotfl:
Phew! We really need to get ourselves organised though!:(0 -
If you want to file your tax return online you have until 31st January 2011 to do so. If you want to file on paper you have to do it by 31st October 2010.
Either way you have until 31st January 2011 to give your actual 2009/2010 figures to the Tax Credit Office. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
