2 Computers, 1 Printer - can I connect them?

Hi -

I have 2 pc's and 1 printer. For the past few years I have been using a wireless printer adaptor to connect my computer to the printer, and the second computer was connected using the usual cable (this computer is only used once a week). It was a pain having to keep plugging and unplugging but it worked ok.

Anyway, the wireless adaptor has stopped working and I wanted to know if there is any way to connect both computers to the printer?

They are not currently networked and the wireless router is downstairs so I cant run it through that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Clare

  • If both PCs connect to the wireless router, then technically they are networked and you could share the printer from the PC it is physically connected to. The only downside would be that the PC with the printer connected would need to be switched on whenever you want to print.

    What make is the printer?

AndyCam's suggestion is probably the easiest to set up and get running.

But depending on the printer you may be able to get a USB dongle and network adapter that you plug into the printer and your router to use it independently of any other machine being on or off...

  • I use a networked external hard drive with a built in printer server.

External back up for all three computers and printer sharing as well.

    THanks for all the replies.

Neither computer are connected to the router as they are on difference floors in my house. I've got a Belkin wireless dongle which sorts out the wireless connection.

If I buy a Multi USB can i connect That to my computer and run the second computer and printer out or it as well?

Sorry - i'm a totally uselss with this stuff!

If the PC's connect wirelessly to the network then the printer only needs to be connected to one PC and "shared" on the network so that the other PC can see it.

What's the make and model of the printer.

Their might be a suggestion on the makers website on wireless printing.
