Hotel and internet access

Help please.

I have a wireless laptop, a hi-speed internet cable and I'll be in a hotel room that has dial up access.

How much is this likely to cost me and is there an alternative to accessing internet in my room?

Thank you.

  • You'll have to ask the hotel. They are the only people who will know what they charge for the phone call. I take it you have a dial-up modem and account set up?

There may be a Wi-Fi hotspot nearby - see, for example, http://www.btopenzone.co.uk/

You would have to ask the hotel how much dialup access is going to cost (you can be sure it will be dearer than normal).

    Alternatives..............

Lots of places now offer either free or paid for wireless broadband. You could take a wander with the laptop, find a place (pub, coffee shop etc) that offers wireless connections, and see how it goes. Some will be free, some you will have to buy a card that gives you a password to connect. The charges here will vary according to the place you are at. The hotel my GF works at offers wireless broadband. Customers buy a card at reception for £12, and this gives 24 hours of connection in the hotel.

  • Each hotel group have different rates for their dial-up.

You will need to contact the hotel concerned. Perhaps it wouldnt be a bad idea to find out if there is a hotel/services close by to the hotel that you are staying it that has WIFI set up. May be cheaper to drive there than pay for dial up.
Some 5* hotels offer free WIFI.

From experience, hotels charge pathetically high rates for their phone calls.

I don't think so :o I just use wireless all the time at home.
I'd better do this before I go?

I use a dial up service sometimes to check peoples connections when I need to (to see if it's their computer, or their ISP). You don't need to register, or give any details to use the service.

    The connection details are..............

    phone number: 0845 665 1888

    Username: guest@inspiron.co.uk
    Password: guest

I've always been able to connect with this service, and it saves setting up any accounts. You are normally charged 1 pence a minute cheap rate (but the hotel will charge more for the call).

Starbucks & macdonalds generally have wi-fi. It's may also be worth having a look on your laptop when you get to the hotel. One I visited last year had a wired PC in the business centre which you could use but this was connected to a wireless router which, because they hadn't really bothered to set it up, had no password on the wireless connection. One quick search later and I found the router and connected.

    Cheers

  • Well I'm here :)

I just accepted the invite to the hotel's wireless network.
... wonder how I'm paying for this?
