Hi there I have a problem. I am in the process of defending myself in a CCJ case and have a very strong case. A company requested an important letter back in March so I printed it off and sent it. 2 days after my pc was infected with a virus and I had to restore the pc to factory settings hence losing all my files. In hindsight I now wish I'd backed up all the files. Now the matter is going to court and the other side it requesting to view this letter. The firm I sent it to back in March refuse to send it back to me as they are no longer acting in this matter. My question therefore is simple - is there anyway at all of retrieving files from the pc even if it was restored back to the factory settings? I have been told that the files are probably still on there somehow but deep deep down. Any advice greatfully received!!

A Data Recovery specialist can recover the data but at a very high cost .
Their are a few data recovery home user tools that can recover from a formatted drive .
Worth a look at this one first .

I would ask the Court to recover your letter from the solicitor as its required evidence .

Why are they refusing to send it back if they are not involved anymore or are they refusing to return it because they don't have it?0 -
If your "return to factory conditions" did not involve a re-format of the hard disc, then one of the low-cost (or even free) recovery programs off the internet may well find your file for you.
However, do not use that hard disc in the meantime as just by using it, you may well overwrite the section of the disc that still retains the file, thereby rendering it unrecoverable.
Best bet would be to remove the hard disc, install it as a secondary drive in another computer, download a recovery program to that computer's primary drive and run it to recover the files from your original drive.
I have not had to do this myself at anytime, so cannot recommend a recovery program, but would expect that many people on this board can do so.0
