Hi, No harm in trying out in a small way and see how it goes, test your market. I buy home made cakes from our local butchers, they have a lady that makes the most divine Carrott Cake for £2.50, much nicer than any store bought cakes. I also occassionally get cakes from our local farm shop, the charge a little more £6.00 for a chocolate cake but it is wrapped up almost like a present so they make great gifts or birthday cakes. Decide where you will outlet your cakes and start small. Most little businesses have to start somewhere.

Dead right. But the first place to start is by doing your research.

real indepth research that will tell you if theres any money to be made in that field and if you can make a business out of it, or whether it is more likely to be a paid hobby.

The OP says she has a holiday village nearby, and I read her post as meaning that she was going to try that as an outlet. It may be seasonal but I would have thought that would be almost a niche market, after all who would want to make a cake on holiday? Even if someone did the self catering accommodation is very unlikely to include the necessary equipment in the inventory. It would of course be best if she could devise a way of selling direct to the punters rather than through the site owner or shop. We have stayed on campsites where a fish and chip van calls in at certain times. I wonder what arrangement they would have in place - fixed fee or % of sales? Perhaps the OP could come to a similar arrangement.

  • Hi Biglass

Was looking for advice on how to start homebaking company and just wanted to see if you had gone ahead with it? If so, how is it going? If not, why?

Hi Forerunner! Wow, long time since I was considering this business, time flies! No,I decided not to start up the business and just stick with my current job, which is now a permanent contract,so safe and well paid, tho I hate it! But hey ho,pays the bills! But I reckon homebaking would be reasonably successful where I live, due to the holiday market, but I suppose I find it easier to work for someone else at the mo,especially as my kids are still only young. But good luck if you go for it!
