Hi all,
Just changed my phone from monthly contract to PAYG and I have 100 MB free internet.
It seems however that overnight my phone has used 5 mb just updating widgets!
Is there a simple on off switch in the phone or downloadable as a widget for internet activity.
Something which means I can sttill make and receive calls/sms, but will not update widgets or download any data until I select it.
Also, a desktop widget refresh button would probably be an idea if I had the above so any recommendations on this would be helpful.
I appreciate any tips.

Yeah 100MB is quite low. I'm on T-mobile and get 3GB (roughly 3000 MB) and use about 2GB a month (although I do download a lot of podcasts).
You can download a great free app from the market called "3G Watchdog" that keeps tabs on your usage and will warn you when you're near your limit.
If you want to stop all internet access you can disable the mobile network by holding down the on/off/hang up button and selecting it. You may be better just disabling the wigets you don't need , like the weather, and knocking the facebook / email checking down.0 -
There's a couple of things you can do:
1) If you have wi-fi make sure you get the phone to use this rather than 3g when you're at home
2) Go to Settings > Accounts and Sync and un check Background Data and Auto-sync0 -
Thanks all, really useful. This mobile network unchecking, can that be put on the desktop as a button?0

There is a widget already installed on the phone that can do that (assuming you have the latest firmware). Just go to the add button then widget > Settings then pick the button you want. Alternatively the power control widget is very handy.
I wouldn't recommend swithcing off the mobile network if you can help it as its a bit of a pain switching it on again all the time when you want to use the internet. Try switching off auto-sync and see how you get on.
Also I would recommend an app called Netcounter which will help you keep track of your data usage.0 -
Quick Settings .
Turn OFF/ON Mobile Data Bluetooth GPS WIFI at the touch of a button easy to use Mobile data APN is the one to set up on it for best results .Saves battery as well as you only turn on what you want to use .
Available via AppBrain /Android Market Free .

Also, have a check within each app you have and reduce the frequency with which it updates. Does Facebook need to update every 5 mins, or your email, etc etc. ?? IF you really want to save data, set all these to manual sync, and every now and then hit the "sync all" button to update everything.
I leave most apps to auto update, but make sure this is done infrequently. I also use 3G Watchdog (free app) to monitor my data.

Which button would that be?
The data on off button, eems to only shut down 3g, butthen my phone will just sync using 2g.
Appreciate your feedback0 -
It's the icon that says "mobile". This will shut down all data connectivity.0
