Having a Dip CII or ACII is no indication you have an idea of what you are talking about. There was a manger who used to work at my old company who had a Masters in engineering, FCII, FCILA, MRICS and FEUDI and his knowledge of recent law and particulary the implications of the FSA being involved was shocking to the point where it was embarassing.0

Yes but the difference now is that you have to undertake CPD and keep a record of your studies in order to keep your accreditation. The standards of the CII exams are also much higher now and the qualifications more difficult to achieve.
I do agree though that exams only show that you have reached a certain standard and true professionals need to have relevant qualifications together with real life experience.0 -
I can see where FlameCloud is coming from. In my experience many, many people take certain CII exams, pass them and then speak authoritatively on subjects despite what they are saying actually being incorrect. At that point a little knowledge is more dangerous than not knowing anything in the first place...0

I dont think CPD makes a difference though- its been 3 years since I stopped studying with the CII and I have not once been asked for it- also with the amount of CPD credits given for silly in work courses makes it pointless in my opinion. The CII dont really publicise it that well.
I stand by my belief that employers only like insurance qualifications as it allows them to pass the blame upwards - saying basically that 'its not my fault, I asked an ACII and he made the decision!'
That being said however, there are a number of insurers who will only allow claims of certain value levels to be dealt with by adjusters with certain qualifications, so if you want to progress you have no real option.0 -
I achieved my ACII back in 1992 (yes.... I'm really old). Since then I have been asked to produce CPD records three times (twice in the last 5 years), so the CII are certainly checking even if it is only very random
Don't sit back - the exams are just the start but they do give you a great foundation for a career in a great profession. But that's all they are a foundation. Don't expect a diploma to suddenly open doors for you. It didn't in my day and I don't think it carrys that much clout today. Experience and hardwork will give far more reward0
