I think a number of issurs are doing the same thing basicaly because they have any "Available limit" available from them selves incase its spent thsi costs the company money so they will be trying to limit there expenses for huge limits that are rarely if ever used.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

I have just had the letter that has reduced my credit limit on an Amex Blue Card from 3000 to 500. I was talking to one of my colleagues in work and he has had the account cancelled. We are both in good standing, no missed payments and we have both done a balance transfer in the last few months away from the card. One thing that I have noticed is that the Blue card no longer exists on the site to new customers so is this one way that Amex is trying to move us away.
I have written a polite, but firm complaint / cancellation letter to them and must thank excel1966 for the "correct" address to send it to. If you have decided NEVER to do business with them again one thing that I would recommend is reminding them of the data protection act and the final paragraph I have added is this (feel free to lift and use when required).

"I have destroyed my cards, paid the outstanding debt owed, cancelled the direct debit with my bank and your organisation and would request that of the date of receipt of this letter that my account is closed. I would also demand that under the Data Protection Act 1998 part II section 11 that within 1 month of my account closure that any relevant information about me that would enable direct marketing material from yourselves, affiliated companies or those that you may resell this information to is deleted from your system. Please note that if this is not actioned to my satisfaction I will take reasonable action as allowed under Part II section 13 of the said act."

I am sending this signed for so that I have proof of delivery. For those that don't know once you have informed them and given them a reasonable time you are allowed get compensation for distress and inconvenience (Data Prot Act Part II section 13) that they may have caused. This is normally something like £25 per letter or phone call. Bill them quote the letter you sent and the relevant date. No response take them to small claims court and that will teach them to p-you off.

Hope this is not a silly question, but how would you confirm that they had removed your information, short of requesting it under DPA and paying £10 or whatever it is now?

I'd like to know where you got this from, but sadly I don't think Part II §13 applies:

    (2) An individual who suffers distress by reason of any contravention by a data controller of any of the requirements of this Act is entitled to compensation from the data controller for that distress if-
    (a) the individual also suffers damage by reason of the contravention, or
    (b) the contravention relates to the processing of personal data for the special purposes.
Of course your definition of damage and distress may differ somewhat from mine, but I don't think merely contravening Part II §11 constitutes either of these. It certainly doesn't mention anything about inconvenience. (I'm more inclined to think that §13 is more applicable to contraventions of §10.)

  • I believe you can still get the blue card, go to

    http://www.americanexpress.co.uk/blue

But you'll notice that you can't do it online, it asks you to call, so it may well
not be available anymore. Also they don't seem to advertise it on the main
web site any more as you mention.

Just checked my Platinum Amex online - credit limit is the same (£6100), with about £1200 on the balance. Won't be surprised if they reduce my limit for non-use.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

I recently applied for Blue, got accepted, sent the signed form back and I'm awaiting the card to arrive now. I had to call and they took me through the application process that way. Very annoying, but it got me there in the end.

    Hi,

My Amex platinum credit limit has been slashed from £4500 to £500. History perfect but a recent B.T. from the card. Telephone calls to Amex bring same scripted reply of 'computer review' etc. ATM facility withdrawn also.
Time to say cheerio I think!

Having read this thread a couple of days ago I become a bit paranoid that I keep on checking my Amex account regularly and so far it has not been changed. If it happenns to me I have no hesitation on closing my account.

I have already been contemplating of closing this account having reduced their cash backs offers this October but I was planning to wait till my anniversary.

I'll keep a close eye on it.;)
