BT are a shower of ****!!
Not only have they not written off the monies that we had outstanding at our Bankruptcy, they have now threatened to cut us of just because we are Bankrupt!!!
Our account is up to date, all we owe them for is the next three months (Oct - Jan) but on top of all this they are charging me £30.05 per month to pay for it which is £90.15 when my bill is only £55.15 and my additional calls over the last three months were £11.50.
For anyone out there that is planning on going bankrupt and has an account with BT, change provider before you declare yourself bankrupt. If you have any bill outstanding with them this will be included in the BR (including any early cancellation fees). If for some reason you do get cut off with your other provider, BT has to supply with you a phone line because they have a universal service obligation so you wouldn't be with out a phone line.
Thanks
Angie

when i went BR i owed BT money for broadband, but i paid my bill monthly thru their website, they wanted the arrears paying but i said i couldn't as they were included in my BR, they were not satisfied and said they'd cut me off my phone line but i pointed out i payed someone else for it. Ha ha ha. A few weeks later they cut off my broadband which was good as it got me out of the contract and i could go elsewhere cheaper. Always worthwhile changing your line rental before BR, well said.0

Hi Angie. I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. Hopefully someone will be along soon to offer advice on how best to proceed (the only thing I can recommend is contacting the Citizens' Advice Bureau; they probably will have someone that can help you to resolve this situation).
BT caused me more than one headache when I moved into my own house last year. It's a Housing Association property and I have an IVA, so cannot afford to spend money I don't have on spurious charges (even if they are subsequently refunded). I can well understand how frustrated you feel.
Here's a little Youtube BT-related clip that I hope might cheer you up a bit:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg1CLskFIKQ.
Keep smiling - it will be OK (although it probably doesn't feel like it just now).

I am a trainee adviser with CAB, so that's good. Also, I really just wanted to warn people that were thinking of going BR to make sure they came out of any contract they have with BT prior to going BR
Thanks0 -

Here's an update on our complaint so far
Dear Mr ........
I was going to email you back when I had something definite from Legal.
Our Legal team has now passed your case over to the Regulatory team who are now looking at the Universal Service Obligation. We are unsure if the Universal Service Obligation applies to customers who are Bankrupt.
A person who is Bankrupt is allowed £500.00 worth of credit but this is over all of your creditors.
As soon as I have something back I will let you know.
Kind regards
Victoria Kain

Bull !!!!!
a BR can apply for credit upto £500 without telling the person ie phone, cable etc
I'm with sky Im not discharged and they didnt do a credit check!Total Weight Loss - 28lb and countingAD 17/11/20100 -
So is general consensus to switch from BT ? i have both my broadband and phone with them ... and don't owe them anything ... should i change ?0

I would also like some advice with regard to whether we should switch before our bankruptcy? if yes then whos best to switch to?0

If you came out of your contracts their would be an charge for coming out of your contract early and this could be included in your BR.
If I had have known we were going to have this kind of problem with them I would have tried to get an account elsewhere. Now the only problem with this is your credit rating.
As daft as it seems, before we declared ourselves BR in March our credit rating wasn't to bad because we hadn't defaulted on any of our payments (had paid less than our contractual payments on non-priority debts but didn't default) and we didn't have any arrears on our priority debts so we would have probably been able to get our service from somewhere else.
Our problem was compounded by the fact that we had to move and BT charged us £130  for connecting the line (there was already a line in to the property so they basically robbed us blind, but that is another story).
I hadn't thought it through properly and didn't realise that we could have got rid of BT at the time because their bill would have just gone into the BR so after moving i should have set up a service with someone else.
If you are in a similar situation and are going to have to move because of the BR I would consider getting rid of them before you go BR and find someone else.
If you do struggle to find another provider, from what I understand BT have a Universal Service Obligation which means that they must supply you with a phone line. If you credit rating isn't good then they can ask for a deposit upfront. I understand that O2 offers Broadband without doing any credit checks and Orange have a package in place to help people with poor credit ratings.0
